Classrooms, Not Trailers

Too many of Astoria’s children have been shunted into substandard trailer classrooms. These trailer classrooms were often meant as short-term fixes have become long-term problems. Experts agree that the classroom environment has a significant impact on learning. Costa believes that all Astoria’s children deserve to have top notch learning environments.

As your City Council representative, Costa will work to end these trailer classrooms increasing and encourage school construction throughout the city.

Reducing Class Size

Costa is dedicated to improving education for Astoria’s children. Compelling evidence demonstrates that reducing class size has a positive effect on student achievement overall and an especially significant impact on the education of inner-city children. Costa has been a long-time advocate for reducing class size to help raise student achievement, especially in at-risk schools. Smaller classes improve classroom atmosphere, students receive more individualized attention and teachers have flexibility to use different instructional approaches and assignments.

As your City Council representative, Costa will work to reduce class size by increasing funding for additional teachers and encourage school construction throughout the city.

Encouraging Parental Involvement

As a parent, Costa understands that education begins in the home. Study after study have shown the importance of parental involvement to their children’s education. Costa believes that parents should meet with their children’s teachers on a regular basis -- to access the student’s academic performance, to actively organize and monitor a child's time, to help with homework and to discuss school matters.

As your City Council representative, Costa will support programs that promote and encourage parental involvement in a child's education.
